I'm not sure that this is exactly a new youth subculture, if a "subculture"
at all. These kids have been around for decades. Rather, it's a slice of
society that has always been evident. A recent thread about the
not-so-good movie aside, I think you'll find that "The Talented Mr. Ripley"
pretty well exemplifies that fact. While the writing (particularly the
ending) was poor, I think they were able to capture a period and a group of
youngsters pretty accurately. There always have been and always will be
trust fund babies. Still, its an interesting observation for you to have
made.
I can't speak for what's going on around the coasts of Britain, but there
have been other youth centered sub-cultures in Britain, some more related
to mod, such as Casuals, and more recently some less related to mod. The
Face did an article in 1994(?) about some kids in Britain who were
completely obsessed with Ralph Lauren's Polo label. They sought out the
rarest items, paterns, colors and whathaveyou. I assume it was short
lived, but there you are.
