Just as Mr. Player pointed out the similarities between the Newson Ford
proto type, his plagiaristic design habits didn't seem to begin there. Not
to say he doesn't make old ideas his own, he just doesn't improve upon the
older designs as much as you might expect. From the furniture and interiors
I've seen done by him (mostly collections from the early nineties), they
seem equal parts Eero Aarnio and Joe Colombo, two of my favorite designers.
Newsons's "Gluon Chair", he seemed to draw a lot from Colombo's "Tube"
(chair), and if you've ever seen Colombo's "Visiona 1" (1969), youd
"borrow" a few ideas too (I.e. Newson's Mash Restaurant).
This only leads me to one conclusion: Marc Newson has excellent taste, and
along with a couple of almost-nearly-not-quite-but-good-enough originals, ya
gotta give it up for his efforts.
