I like Moondog for what it is-who else duets with ships in the Hudson river? 
To immaculately string together several topics,I might add that if your 
looking for flute music, there's none finer than Mr. Eric Dolphy. Known 
primarily for his alto saxophone playing, Old Eric also used clarinet and 
bass clarinet, which he also plays beautifully.Check out "out to lunch" or 
"out there",two great early 60's jazz records, where he plays all the above 
mentioned instruments.He also does some of his best work with Charlie 
Mingus,favoring flute on the more orchestral pieces like "half mast 
inhibition". Obviously this isn't dance music (unless on qualudes) but it 
often has drive and stradles the stylistic lines of free jazz and hard bop.
