Why do people bother with anything?

Why do people bother being skinheads? It's not 1969, it's not
England, and most people assume you're a Nazi.

Why do people bother being "punk rock"? It's not 1977, CBGB's
has long ceased being relevant, and people look really silly
with safety pins in their faces.

Why do people bother calling themselves "rude boys" when they're
15-year-old white kids from the suburbs in ill-fitting suits?

Why do people bother being intolerant when it's so incredibly
stupid?

The point is that there is no point. But would the world be as
interesting without the contributions that subcultures have
made, and continue to make? People need to feel as though they
belong to something, it's human nature. There will always be
enough obscure 60s musicians to ensure that we'll never run out
of "new" music to listen to, plus many of us listen to
contemporary stuff as well. vintage clothes become scarcer and
scarcer, but there are always tailors who can recreate those
styles for us, not to mention the fact that just about every
designer in business today seems to go through a "60s-inspired"
phase just about every three years.

The world would turn just fine if we weren't doing what we do,
but what would be the point of that?
