That 180 gm vinyl is beautiful, too--although if I'm not careful, the
stylus will sometimes scratch the record as the tone arm returns. Short of
buying a nicer record player, does anyone have any suggestions that could
stop this problem? I hate hovering over the turntable while I'm listening
to some of those Blue Note reissued LPs.

Eamon,
you might want to go with your own suggestion of buying a nicer turntable.
Short of that, there must be a way to deactivate your tone-arm return on the
one you have. I sympathize with you, though, that sure is a horrible sound
when the needle connects as it returns.
