WELL WELL WELL!
The Hideaway boys have done it again! I knew it was going to be a
packer so me and my partner in soul Andy Pointon got there early. No queue
as anticipated, but a lovely (and fabulous!) tape on the door (including
Little Milton - Ain't no Big Deal Over You, not expensive, but about time
that got a wider airing! Expect to hear it at Hipnotism on the 4th! Great
tune!).
Mike first on the decks when I arrived. It was clear that Mr
Warburton had been listening intently to Brain Rae's Sue Special on Jazz FM
last week (He eventually admitted it to me!) as he pulled out all the rarest
stuff on this great UK label. Stuff like Harold Burrage 'I Just Want One'
and Ernestine Anderson 'Keep An Eye On Love' all got a spin, much to my
delight. Then the R'n'B brothers, Matt and Nick Hudson, managed to keep me
out of breath with some astonishing instrumentals which I noticed got
suspiciously faster and faster! They'll never learn these DJ's!
Neil Henderson went too far and played that 'Pretty Eyed Baby' on
Checker AGAIN, after forcing me to play it a few weeks ago! I asked him how
much he wanted. It wasn't for sale. Dammnit!
Then everyone arrived. The infamous 'magic bus' from Leeds. The
Welshmen, the rockabillies (who managed to disturb everyone that night
including Jo, Abigail and myself with tales of wives knickers as dancing
fuel?!). Pregnant women I haven't seen in months. Everyone who was anyone
('and no-one', as Julian pointed out!) was in attendace. Records for sale
(inc Mr Warburton flogging a copy of Billy Stewart to some lucky unnamed
Welshman. I'll get you a copy yet Abster, I promise!). Tapes for sale (BTW
Tinx, that volume 1 is great! so I expect it in the post soon!) from
traveller extraordinaire Ady Lupton who, it transpires, managed to make a
few quid out of us all! God bless him.
>Matt Bolton definitely had a top night as I could have sworn the
bloke >was drunk, I suppose that's true elation for you!
That was due to some of 60's America's finest hitting the decks like
one of my faves for a couple of weeks now, Clyde McPhatter's 'I Never Knew'
(which the lads were kind enough to put on the tape!), but no sight nor
sound of that Escorts version of Freddie North's 'The Hurt' from Mr Welsby.
I think he's bluffing! But it was on the tape. (still prefer Freddie
North's!)
Then I got my second wind and went mad to some great northern including
Ben E King's 'I Just Can't...', his best side for me, and then instigated a
new dance manouvre to Ronnie Love's current monster. I don't think it'll be
catching on. Come on now , do 'THE CHILL' ! I expect it to be performed in
every dancehall throughout the country!
Then before you knew it the end of he night was upon us and I was
dragging a reluctant Ms Ridehalgh onto the dancefloor making her dance for
her money after I realised she'd only really 'spent' 1:50 of her
extortionate 3 entrance fee!
Then it was goodbye and farewell to everyone till next time.
May I just point out that 'MOD OF THE WEEK' award must go to
the clubs own Paul Welsby, who, after staying awake all day Saturday after
an allnighter on Friday night did the Hideaway and then caught a plane with
his 'wife and kids' at 4am Sunday morning to some far away, no doubt less
Mod, tropical location. And this from the man who told me that I'd 'slow
down' when I get older. Mr Welsby can presently be found in a far away
hospital being treated for exhaustion.
Yours,
Snaggletooth.....
p.s. apologies for those who might have got this twice. You can live those
memories again!
