Totally random subject here... (what's new?) Having bought and listened to Eighteen Street Lounge's Dubbed Out in DC, JTQ's newest CD, and Corduroy's newest one Click (now on Big Cat), I feel that the only group of people really *progressing* in the original style of the label that was Acid Jazz (at the peak of its originality) have been Eric Hilton et al (of Eighteen Street Lounge, Thievery Corporation, and Exodus Quartet fame). The newest Thievery Corporation and ESL soundtrack are both unbelievable! They have a truly modern aesthetic. Eighteenth Street Lounge in Washington DC *was* an exclusive club years before I moved here. Now Hilton (like most people) likes to make money and therefore cannot handpick his crowd too often (although they still let smartly dressed people in for free and make people who come wearing jeans pay $10 to get in,... or so I hear :-)) The nice thing about the place is that the DJ's own it and don't have to answer to upper management in compiling their playlists. At any rate, the sound Thievery Corp. (and ESL) in general have been producing for years- Corduroy and JTQ are just now beginning to "copy" (albeit a rough, less refined copy). It's kind of a mix between old and new without defacing the integrity of the original samples. I like to describe their sound as Jobim and Gilberto in OuterSpace :-) :-) alicia _____________________________________________________________ Want to find the best email lists?
