If I'd taken part in the bespoke survey, I'd have said I don't know much about "revival" So here's my thoughts on all this revival chat. 1. The Jam were not a revival band. They started in the early 70's doing Soul/R&B covers, speeded up with the punk influence, then slowed down to find their own thing, I suppose they were called revivalists in 1977, I never really bought PW's argument that you can't be a revivalist if you are only 18. I just think there was enough originality in there to make it their distinctive sound. That's why I liked them & used to play them a lot. However, I soon found the roots to be where the rare gems can be found. 2. I'd define "revival" as 60's influenced bands who started in 79 or 80. The only ones I know anything about (Purple Hearts/Chords) didnt really want to be The Jam. I heard that The Chords' Chris Pope hated Paul Weller. (I only just found out their "So Far Away " LP cover is a ripoff/tribute of the Spencer Davis Group LP cover). If you need to categorise it for people who haven't heard it :- I call this lot "79 revival", with the 80's & 90's Detour type Mod bands as a sort of Phase 3, just like the way the Ska/2Tone phases are broken down. _____________________________________________________________ Want to find the best email lists?
