True.. but is swing really dead or just not the type of swing you
want to hear. Something I have learned about music centered
subcultures is that in the beginning stages the point is to expose
the public to it in order to maybe get some mass appeal. People with
in a sub culture will work their asses off in order to get some
recognition to their love. I guess this is because one of the
underlying themes of music and culture is to share it with others in
hope that they get as much good out of it as you. Its like a drug..
you are the pusher.
However.. once the mainstream is turned onto it.. you see a
backlash.. and usually the ones who worked the hardest to break the
sound to the masses are the first ones to jump ship because it got
too weird.. Metaphor time.. The drugs got bad.. you want nothing to
do with them.. you want a different drug..
This has happened to me two times.. Once with hardcore punk (side
note: who was the first to rap to hardcore? Earth Crisis I think..
scary) and once with Jungle. So I have much respect for those who
are reserved about their interests. I myself have become much more
reserved about my musical and cultural preferences. But in the
process of doing this I have also found the much of my musical and
cultural preferences are becoming more selective and only appeal to a
selective audience.
I seriously don't think mod will ever blow up to a stage of Swing.
Swing had solid American roots and was looked upon as a sort of
Americana. Sure we might see a whole "60's swinging london"
sensation sweep across america for a summer.. but I think we can all
agree that there is more to a mod way of life then anyone would like
to care to worry about. Especially in America.. Lazy Yanks..
More or less my points with Mod fashion coming back is just to show
my excitement for the recognition of what I think are some of the
best and most forgotten contributions to English and American
culture. As I have said this many times before.. MOd interests me
mostly with its role in fusing Black and white music together. Any
sort of recognition, even if it is indirect, is very exciting to me..
Shows that good ideas stand the test of time.. and a good mod
lifestyle can too..
