You're right, the US has a big 'nerdy - hobbyist' sort of culture...mainly
because it is a BIG country, with a BIG amount of people. In addition, US
culture, or lack there of, is the most expressed/exported/transmitted
culture in the world. So it's quite possible for people in other countries
to know more about US exported culture than the expanse of their own culture.
I'm quite sure that England has it's share of 'nerdy - hobbyist' probably
equal to that of the US in relation to the size of England. In fact, my own
cousin (near London) wants to be American so bad it is pitiful. He even had
me help him buy an American 70's muscle car to complete his image...and yes
he is part of a club.

I've yet to meet any of these devoted belle & sebastian fans, everyone
speaks of. Or is it just Paul repeatedly mentioning them?

This is definitely not exclusive to the US...
I don't mean to carry on the US vs UK thread...I don't think one is better
than the other, they're just different.
I simply took Paul's post as he said to take it... "- AS A KIND OF
EXPLANATION AS TO MY 'PREJUDICES')"
And we all know prejudice is born from ignorance...just trying to squelch
the ignorance.
Because I am all-knowing...
