Seeing as I have the straightest, finest hair in the world and anything
short of superglue merely weighs it down, I'm a big fan of wiglets and
hairfalls when I want a big bouff...lot less trouble, lot more volume and
you don't fry you're hair. Most of the fantabulous hairstyles you see from
sixties are due to little hairpieces and falls (women did not genetically
mutate in the sixties to all have MASSIVE volumes of hair to backcomb!!).
It works particularly well for the more Barbarella/Bardot looks, but they
also make all sorts of small little add on's for bobs too...The best part
about them is they hold up *really* well for a night of dancing (I usually
where them for my go go dancing gig at Pandora's box on Sundays in
fact)...The only downfall is they can get a little hot in the summer!

Subject: Re: Hairspray 'n' Bouffants
Being a fan of big hair, and (attempting daily at) having it myself, I just
had to post.
Helen, keep in mind there are many Americans on this list as well. As far
as I know, I've never run across anything called 'Nova' but I'm sure there
are American equivalents. Not everyone's hair is the same TYPE of hair
either, and due to my ethnic background I have extremely thick, straight,
heavy hair that doesn't hold a curl, a style, a bouffant, what-have-you
without TONS of good spray and a whole lot of WORK. Your technique, while
being very ingeniuous, would never work on my hair. I have a chin-length
bob a la' Sandie Shaw (or so I like to think) but more bouffanted out than
hers was. My technique?
1.Dry it halfway dry upside down with a blowdryer. While it's still damp,
roll the top sections onto LARGE Velcro rollers. (In the 60's my mom used
to use orange juice cans, which work well also). Use pink setting tape,
which can be bought at any drugstore, to tape the side pieces to your cheeks
in that perfect curl. SOAK it all in setting spray then BLOWDRY like crazy
on HIGH heat.
2.Take the rollers and tape out and comb out. Tease the undersides of the
big curls to get height, shaping, smoothing and spraying with your fave
hairspray the entire time (mine? Salon Selectives Number 20 Hold in aerosol.
Nice and sticky and doesn't smell too chemical-y).
3. Wet fingers with hairspray and shape little side-curls by cheeks. Then
finish with a big, flourishing final spray! Ta-da! Ready to shake shake
shake without a single hair falling out of place (well maybe a few!)
Believe it or not, my current land speed record with this technique, from
soaking wet to finished product, is about 15 minutes.
I've also totally ruined my do by NOT thinking to put on my turtleneck
BEFORE I styled it - duh! Dontcha hate that?
I can almost hear the boys puking from here,
