Last Saturday was a sucess I would say. Dispite the fact that this
years Mods May Day was held in the bigger room of the usually venue. It
was more like an above average Solid show that gave barely any room to
dance. It contained only 4 bands and 5 Djs.... rather mediocre compared
to last year's, which was I think 10 bands and 9 Djs. Basically all the
Solid regualars were there (Terry ofcourse, Cliff, Adam, etc.) and lots
of new faces from San Diego and San Fransico (even some Emo kids). Lots
of shiny suits, parkas, "bum frezzer" jackets and some baggy pants
(means there was also some of the comman folk that attended). I heard a
fight broke out but still have no idea who else was brawling other than
some skinhead.
The highlight band of the night was barely Mojo Filter, a highly
suave combo of 4 that really posesses the sophistication of soul. Kudos
to Cliff the bass player who I found impressive for his thumping,
smooth, "mega-James Jamerson" bass licks (not to mention his victory in
winning Best Dancer of the night, which was highly deserved). They ended
the set with an endearing cover of the Small Faces classic, "All or
Nothing". And who can forget the crowd pleasing preformace, mostly
memorable for the last songs with guest vocalists, of LA's very own
power pop/soul trio, The Question. The Chasers finished the night and
came second in my book, delivering a hard, enthusiastic, loud
preformance of foot stomping R&B. With a 7 peice band like them, it
isn't very hard to. I've seen better Chasers' sets though. The DJs of
the night were very apreciated, by me atleast, for playing their sets of
soul (and a pinch of Mod) records of both the rare and the familar.
If I was to give the night a letter grade, maybe a B+ would be the
highest I could give it. Last year's May Day was definatlely an A or A+
with help from the R&B band, the Nick Rossi Set (who I'm still waiting
for to come to Solid again) for their increadible preformance. It's hard
to recreate nights like May 5th, 1999 (last year's May Day), a night
where it seemed like us mods took over the whole club but there's no
rush anyways....this year's was only the second of So. Cal Mods May Day
and was overall a decent follow up.
......sorry for the miss-prints and this review's "high school paper
vibe". Thank you.
Nick from L.A.
