Hi Elizabeth!
I don't know if anyone else will agree with me, but these are my
favourite clubs in London:
Monday: Trash @ The Annexe (Dean Street, Soho)
It is not mod strictly speaking, but you'll find a few mods
there. They play loads of random stuff, from The Who to New Order to
ABBA! Check out their website: www.trashclub.co.uk
Tuesday:...I still haven't found anything decent to do on a Tuesday
night.
Wednesday: Candy Box @ Le Scandale (Berwick Street, Soho)
You'll find most of the Trash regulars here too. Music is
indie/60s mainly. It is also very cheap (free to get in b4 midnight with
a flyer), but I'm afraid that means you get quite a few sleazy drunk
tourists around. Ignore them.
Thursday: Cigarettes and Alcohol @ The Wag (Wardour Street, Soho)
Excellent music upstairs (60s, Northern Soul,
Psychedelia...), quite a few mods around and people who can actually
dance! Downstairs it's just full of randoms moshing to Blur.
The Hideaway @ Le Scandale (Berwick Street, Soho)
I was only there on the opening night and it was practically
empty, but the music was good (they played Pixies, Beatles, The Byrds
and Nancy Sinatra whilst I was there), lots of different stuff on the
play-list. I don't know what it'll be like now. It's been on for less
than a month.
Friday: No idea.
Saturday: Again, no idea. I normally end up in a dump so I don't know
where to direct you to. Avoid Blow Up @ The Wag. I was deceived by the
flyer. The music is very good, but I've never been in a club with such a
high ratio of wankers to normal people. Not a single mod in sight (at
least on the night I was there). All the people there were tourists/
City boys and girls jumping up and down to psychedelia! Not a pretty
sight.
I thought The Monarch would be good, but I've never been
there so read the messages posted by other people and make up your own
mind. Other than that, there is Where It's At @ LSE Union (Holborn),
which has the same djs as Trash. I've never been to that either, but
I've been told it's "mini-Trash". Also, once a month you get The
Mousetrap, a mod all-nighter. I can't remember where, ask around and
someone will be able to direct you.
If you want to buy clothes, try some of the shops in Camden
Market, Greenwich or Carnaby Street (there's a nice little shop just off
Carnaby Street called Yesterday's Bread). There are also quite a few
places around Covent Garden (walk left when you come out of the tube,
otherwise you'll end up in the piazza) and around Notting Hill (lovely
area to walk around, full of cafes and arty kind of people).
This is all my opinion though! I bet loads of people would disagree.
Ultimately, you will have to find out for yourself. Try The New
Untouchables website (can't remember what the website was...I got there
through links). Otherwise, just go to one of the clubs and you'll get
flyers for others, check them out and see for yourself. Enjoy!
