Actually, the funny part about those particularly singers and why they 
went over so well, was because sounded they "white" (i.e., blue-eyed 
soul).  Many DJs who played Jackie Wilson back in the day, didn't know 
he was black...really makes you think.  Of course the politics of the 
50s, did lend a hand in what music was or wasn't played on the radio.  
It was until Chubby Checker and Jackie Wilson were on TV that most of 
the American public realized they were black.  Otis Redding never got 
radio play until Sitting On the Dock of the Bay came out...and it didn't 
hit #1 until after he died...

Just a couple thoughts I'd pass along...
