Interesting you mention Slade... when they first came out, their manager
marketed them as bootboys, ie. the first skinhead band...
Hardly any of those bands were racist... in fact, the [n]ational [f]ront
would probably not even have recruited skinheads or punks had the Sex
Pistols not done the whole nazi armband thing for shock value... when too
many things are mixed, the original purpose seems to be lost.
Skrewdriver was a band on chiswick records who released a pretty good 7"
as a rock n' roll/punk band... then they became skins and released their
first LP, which wasn't bad either... (and also happened to be the influence
for most of the punk, oi, and what was to become the mod revival at the
time) what happened after that was that the band broke up, but retained the
lead singer, who formed another band by the same name, got nf endorsement
and became their spokesband so to speak.
