Now here's something to talk about! The early recordings of David
Bowie! In my opinion Bowie's material from the 60s is ace, and worth
getting. The recordings from the Mannish Boys and David Jones & The
Lower Third are easily accessible, as are the recordings from his Deram
period. The Pye box is worth tracking down only if you don't already
have the 'Early On' release which has all of this material. Although it
gets bashed for being too Anthony Newley-esque, "I Dig Everything" is a
great song! I have been heavily into the Decca/Deram period as of late
as this was his more experimental phase recording brilliant pieces like
"Silly Boy Blue", "Let Me Sleep Beside You", "She's Got Medals", and
"Join The Gang". Also worth finding are the singles he wrote for others
during this period like "Over The Wall We Go" by Oscar on Reaction,
"Silver Treetop School For Boys" recorded by the Beatstalkers and the
Slender Plenty, as well as Billy Fury's version of "Silly Boy Blue".
There is some unreleased material that pops up once in awhile like the
powerful "That's A Promise" and "London Bye Ta-Ta". You may also want
to check out the recently released 'Bowie At The Beeb' double CD, just
the opening version of "In The Heat Of The Morning" featuring the
almighty Alan Hawkshaw on organ and legendary jazz guitarist and former
Georgie Fame & the Blue Flames and Graham Bond member John McLaughlin on
guitar is worth the price alone!
