I have to disagree on that one! Comparing Rasputin and Ameoba to
Virgin, Tower, or Sam Goody is kind of strange seeing that you can't
even buy vinyl at those mentioned commercial record stores. At least at
Ameoba and Rasputins I have found tons of records that are highly
collectable at cheap prices. Damn, at Ameoba within a two week period I
found the Small Faces 'From The Beginning' and the Spencer Davis Group
'Second Album' and 'Autumn '66', all original and all under $5, that's
pretty good if you ask me. At Rasputin's I used to find all kinds of
soul 45s all for a dollar a piece, and some pretty scarce ones at that.
If I had my choice, I wouldn't paronize Rasputin's for personal reasons,
but you have to go where the selection is. Mod Lang is pretty good at
getting it first. They do tend to get in some things that some of the
other stores don't get when it comes to some 60s reissues, but if
Britpop is your thing I highly recommend them. The last time I went to
Open Mind their selection wasn't the greatest and I walked out empty
handed. Forget about Streetlight. Medium Rare in the Castro is good
for finding odd lounge and soundtrack issues. All in all, I think
Rasputin and Ameoba are better than you give them credit for, and they
are the best thing we have in the Bay Area
