I think it's just that constant amazement/amusement at the fact that
individuals of a state that actually has the power to (enthusiastically) kill
its own citizens can really consider themselves freer/more forward thinking
than one that, for example, happens to pay a group of horsey-looking
individuals a lot of money to wave at senior citizens.
