I believe it was originally used as a marker to test the prowess of archers
while they were being prepared for war. Some sources date it back to the
10th century although many feel it could be even earlier than that. When the
crusades et al were no more we adapted the archery board for indoor use and
the game of darts was born, the bullseye is the centre of the board and is
worth 50 points (or a couple of million if your name's Jim Bowen), the outer
rim is worth 25 points and is black. 
The Bullseye also spawned one of Britain's best-loved TV characters "Bully"
the loveable bull whose door invariably concealed a speedboat, an orange
Mini metro or a Swallow caravanette.
