Ok, you asked for it; don't get all pissy when I give it to you. The origin
of the "mod-target" is military. It is symbolic of the history of the
British army, which relied heavily on archery before firearms. The colours
are the national colors of England (hey! they stole ours... or something.)
Ever wear Daddy's Gulf War jacket? This is probably how it became cannonized
in the dressware of teenage amphetamine-amped baby boomers. Before that, it
also was remarkable in post war modern art, where it had the nice quality of
apparently non-representational, but not abstract. When our grandparents saw
it in a piece, it struck a chord of emotion. In a peaceful world, it was a
bit satirical; we'd lost a good portion of our 20-something population to
miltaristic nationalism (ok, for the Brits, it WAS defensive... beside the
point.)

Today, it's got three uses. I often call it an "Anglophile Badge", as it
comes on the lapels of American kids who talk like they've got a potatoe
chip stuck in thier teeth. It also has a place in 'mod art though, as it
cries for an attention to what was lost when the surreal, post modernism,
and commercial "skateboard art", took domination. The third, and my
favorite, is my use: I'm going to throw on a "mod-target" t-shirt, practice
my English accent, and go to the mall to pick up on 15 year old indie-rocker
girls. Think I'm kidding?
