HA! Absolutely nothing on this list for ages, and then this!
Let's hope you're just attempting to wind up people, or otherwise
you're the biggest fucking idiot around. The White Stripes etc. sound NOTHING
like the Nuggets records, which incidentally should be considered required listening
(especially the Nuggets 2 box set) for any wannabe mod worth his fucking
hand-me-down parka. Jesus H., that's Mod 101. Get a clue, or shut your pie-hole.

Dan

BTW, I also like soul. Imagine that. I like them both.

Umm, wait a second, the Embrooks are great. They are really fun, hyper &
have alot of heart. They've done they're homework too. As for the rest of
the groups mentioned, so of course its not mod, duh. I dont buy they're
records, but i'm glad they are getting on the charts...comparitivly, its a
step in the right direction for pop radio. I wish some of you listers spent
as much time just having fun, & encouraging people instead of being self
righteous prudes.

Hey all from Los Angeles.

I'm heading to London in Oct. and I'm looking for suggestion
on places to see, specifically if you're into all things Mod.
Club recommendations would be cool, too.

I'm reading all the usual suspects for suggestions (TimeOut London,
Rough Guide, Lonely Planet guide books, even pulled
out my "The Who: Maximum R&B" by Richard Barnes for suggestions.

Cheers,

The Embrooks are great, and don't belong in that list.
Who is to say I'm not having fun by setting you morons straight?
And BTW, I WAS encouraging people to buy the Nuggets series
you brain-dead twit.

Time to go out for the evening,
Dan

Oh, dear ...

Au contraire, mon frere. Hipster, oui. Crap, non.
Anyway, that second box, "Nuggets II: Original
Artyfacts from the British Empire & Beyond,
1964-1969," in particular, is an excellent
intro/overview to/of music(s) mod and then some,
packaged and priced for your convenience. Pay yr
pounds, tuck it under yr arm, and you're off. Not
everyone can afford all the 45s et al. involved (and
don't even get me started on vintage/vinyl snobbery
...), and perhaps even fewer might ever find them in
the first place. The rest of us, in the meantime,
finally have such nuggets indeed as Q65's "Cry in the
Night" (cf. The Funseekers' fabulously furious cover
thereof) or "How Is The Air Up There?" by The La De
Das available at the flick of a fingernail. Along
with all those Birds, Creation, Eyes, Pretty Things,
Small Faces, et al. tracks. Let yr fingers do the
walking ...

Since when did the word "hipster" become perjorative
amongst this (alleged?) in crowd anyway? Anyway ...

> If you're into soul, stay clear.

If you're ONLY into soul, well, maybe. Or maybe not.
Maybe expand those horizons beyond the
Stax/Volt/Atlantic/whatever et al. empire instead.
Make mine Motown (yet another flamewar nucleus here, I
suspect ...), but ...

Tacky? Why I oughtta ... Strokes, Hives, Shins, White
Stripes, whatever--eh. Yeah Yeah Yeahs--yeah yeah
yeah. Embrooks--as close as yr going to get live ...

So have you actually heard them, or are you simply
assuming? No, thank you very much, we (the imperial
and/or quadrophenic "we," that is) always appreciate
any and all recommended listening. See also, as
always, the Uppers reviews posted previously ...

In the meantime, if obbscurantism remains imperative
here, I've had an astonishing Japanese compilation,
"Go Cinemania, Reel 8: 'Style to Kill,'" going,
styling, and, quite frequently, killing (in the best
possible sense) whilst I type away here. Perhaps a
bit too jazzbo (in not the worst possible sense) on
occasion, but do recall the jazzbo etymological et al.
origins of "mod." "Selected and compiled by Tatsuyuki
Hiyamuta (Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra)" ...

http://www.polystar.co.jp/contents/release/data/2001_03/PSCR5937_cinemania8.html

http://www.so-net.ne.jp/seijun/styletokill/

Soundtrack cuts, it seems, from the films of the very
wonderful Seijun Suzuki. His Youth of the Beast
(1963), Branded to Kill (1967), and, esp., Tokyo
Drifter (1966) ought to be required viewing here ...

See also, while I'm on the subject of the Japnese
nouvelle vague, see also Toshio Masuda's Velvet
Hustler (1967; feat. a fantastic dance sequence and
perhaps the best-dressed cast ever), Kenji Fukasaku's
Black Lizard (1968; think, the Japanese transvestite
Danger: Diabolik!, with an ever better discotheque
scene [!]), and Yasuharu Hasebe's Black Tight Killers
(1966; the eponymous female assassins blind their
victims with bubblegum and finish off the job by
flinging razor-sharp 45's) ...

Off the top of my head: see as well, e.g., the three
volumes of Doin' the Mod (Vol. 1: The Go Go Train; Vol
2: Jump and Dance--this is the best of the three, by
the way; and Vol 3: Maximum R&B); Decca's The Mod
Scene (and Vol. 2 is actually stronger on basic
material than the first disc), as well as (at LEAST)
their The Freakbeat Scene and The Northern Soul Scene
(The Beat Scene and The Girls Scene are favorites as
well; The Psychedelic Scene, The R&B Scene and The
Rock & Roll Scene round out the series); Freakbeat
Freakout (prev. mentioned elsewhere); English
Freakbeat Vols. 1-6 (Vol. 5 is my favorite; Vol. 6 is
largely the old Pebbles "Mod" Vol. 6); The Very Best
Northern Soul All-Nighter ... Ever! (and it really is,
so long as you've rid yourself of that nasty NS habit
of preferring rarity/obscurity over brilliance);
Talcum Soul Vols. 1 & 2 (Vol. 2 is stronger, but Vol.
1 has some indispensible gems not found on other
comps; very little overlap overall); Hipshaker!
(fabulously eclectic); Blow-Up! (ditto, with some
well-chosen contemporary material; see also their
library music comps, 4 vols. so far, I believe; Vol. 2
is my favorite, 3 & 4 feat. French tracks); Mod Fave
Raves Vols. 1 & 2 (ostensibly second-line Motown
singles which nonetheless generally outshine
better-known Tamla tracks); and, among the several
comps. (mod, Northern Soul, whatever), titled The In
Crowd, in particular, the 4 disc Paolo Hewitt-selected
box set. Which would not be a bad place to start ...

Digitally and democratically yrs,

Arriva D.
