I'm guessing this means you're using CVS (or similar) for version control, and basing $VERSION on that automatically. I used to do that, but now I recommend against it, I just update $VERSION manually. It's been much better for me to be able to commit lots of times in between releases, because then each commit is smaller and more easily explainable. And it would be impossible in a collaborative coding environment to only commit once between releases. -Ken
