If ratings are used to compare modules (as opposed to judging each according to its merrits), some modules might be overlooked, especially new modules.
True, and the "popularity metric" that I was proposing would probably only worsen the situation.
One of the "good ideas" in this thread to me was the application of them to search. I agree that new unreviewed modules might be hurt by this, but if the search order let both the review rating and the "recentness" influence its order people would tend to be directed to the right place sooner.
Seems that a popularity metric and ratings would just help highlight this module.
As much as helping you highlight the right module it would hopefully let you steer clear of the poorly documented unmaintained module as well.
