With all due respect, I think Internet Relay Chat is better suited as
a particular instance of the class of short-message systems rather
than the archetype beneath which all manner of SM and IM systems
should be lumped.  I base this on simple taxonomy, and not merely
because Net::IRC::AIM does not exist yet Net::AIM does.

Even so, it seems misleading to imply that this code only works with a
network.  With the right parser, it could thread conversation in a
teleplay as easily as that from a short-message system.

Maybe Text::Chat::Threader?
