For me, maintainer mode == some kind of version control system in use
(eg a subdirectory named .svn, .hg, .git, CVS or some such). This
causes some maintenance hassle to keep track of the latest whizz-bang
VCS du jour, but overall it's good for working as a team because every
contributor runs the maintainer tests.
