I continue to wonder if there’s value in setting this up. Who needs 5.6
or 5.8, etc. so desperately that we need to maintain this stream? How do
we know when they don’t need it?
When I wrote that exact system it was because I wanted it for my perl
5.6 and 5.8 CPAN testing boxes, so I could test new releases with old,
working dependencies. That's quite a long way from a "real world" use
case though!
More useful was that it also supported per-OS CPAN mirrors, so if you
only wanted versions of modules that were known to work on NetBSD, for
example, you could get that. I added that feature because an actual
real-world user asked for it. I can see that it would be useful for
people on things like Windows where support is a bit flakey because
authors don't have access to it.
