You seem to neither mention CPAN.pm version nor the module you tried
to install?
Sorry for that, I was trying to install Module::Build while upgrading CPAN.
I had MB version '0.2612' and was installing version '0.2805'.
It seems to me this specific problem has a workaround in 1.8802 and
1.88_57
CPAN is now v1.8802 so I guess it was some earlier version that did not
have the workaround you mentioned yet.
