IIRC, as long as you have mod_deflate installed on the proxy, it will do
this for you.  mod_cache, for example, caches the uncompressed content.

Just add an output filter that will run after mod_proxy serves up the
response, but before mod_deflate gets a chance at re-compressing it, and
you should be fine.
