function for canonicalizing path names?

Hello,

is there a function in apache or apr to canonicalize pathnames (resolve
a path with symlinks to the "real" path on disk)?

I couldn't find one so far. 

I looked at r->canonical_filename, but it contained the same path as
r->filename, and doesn't have symlinks resolved.
