rationale:
DAS is a trimmed down version of whois (generally only shows domain
availability, no ownership information).
Net::DRI is the only other perl project with DAS functionality, but
it is a 'side' functionality to a much larger project, and not
really maintained.
Net::DAS is much smaller and simpler, and is specific to the
protocol. It also provides a shell script for DAS queries without
coding.
With new GTLDs launching soon - DAS might or might not become a
more popular protocol. Time will tell
