why:
I have written and am currently testing a module (Compress::BGZF)
for reading/writing BGZF files, a gzip variant (see
https://samtools.github.io/hts-specs/SAMv1.pdf , section 4.1) - in
particular supporting non-sequential read access which is the main
selling point of the format.
I believe this module would be of general interest, as BGZF
compression is used by a number of very common file formats in
bioinformatics.
