Not to mention that some anti-spam gateway hardware appliances such as the E5000 and its siblings are now setup to absolutely drop the connection upon receiving the NOOP command. This is nuts but they are doing it.   We actually lost a Corporate Customer because they couldn't communicate with a vendor because that vendor is using one of these NON-RFC Compliant appliances and has blind-devotion to whatever it does.   I brought this to vircom's attention many months ago but it hasn't seemed to be a huge problem since.
