We use two mail gateways in front of our modusgate server (they do all RBL checking).
The run Sendmail on FreeBSD. We usually have about 500,000 messages passed through to the gate each 24 hours.
The one problem we regularly see with Moduscan is not that it crashes, but rather that it simply slows down and allows the /invirus folder to fill up. To counter this problem, we are using ServersAlive to periodically check the number of files in the /invirus folder and restart moduscan every time there are more than X files in the directory.
This has kept the scanning portion of our modusgate running quite well, even while under heavy load.
Because of this automatic check, however, I can't say that moduscan doesn't just crash on its own (even though I have not witnessed this). If it does, then the /invirus folder fills up and ServersAlive will start moduscan, thus fixing the problem.

Hopefully this is helpful to you.

What exactly is crashing in ModusGate? Is it a specific service, or ?

Thanks,

Are there any mail relay recommendations for modusgate in terms of
performance or issues where mail relays that burst thousands of
messages thru them could cause modusgate scanner to crash?

Reason i ask is we are experiencing frequent but
intermittent crashes
with modusgate both on 2.1 and since we've upgraded to 3.0 latest
build and wondered if any mail relays traffic could possibly be
causing some of this?

Thanks in advance,
