On further reading, I learned that the errant header fields are in the
*response*, rather than the request.

Now that I know that, my prior understanding seems silly.  Arriving
header fields can't be anything other than a string.  Response headers
might be something else before being converted to a string and
delivered to the client.

I am looking now at recipes for looking at the response headers within
the script.
