I develop on MacOSX, but then I have never had a need to use -rpath on MacOSX as I always use framework builds of Python when playing with version of Python compiled from source. When framework builds are used, don't need the rpath stuff even if not in standard location. What port of Python to MacOSX are you using? Native Apple versions, MacPorts .... ?
