We've tried a few more of these suggestions - removed MaxRequestsPerChild, upgraded to mod_wsgi 3.3, increased MaxClients - without luck. But finally tried setting the inactivity-timeout and that did the trick. Of course that doesn't really explain what the source of the problem is, but it does prevent our webservers from freezing up and failing to serve requests a few times a day.
