Apologies to Graham and anyone else who took the time to ponder this issue.
I am an idiot.

My criteria for whether the demo codebase was working (because it is
initially identical to the production code) was whether entries were being
written to the django log file. When entries didn't appear I assumed it was
because the code being run was that which did not have the logging
statement in it.

However, because I was hitting the demo version of the code, I needed to be
looking at the demo site django log file, not production. *rimshot*

Again. Sorry to all.
