Are you setting:
WSGIApplicationGroup %{GLOBAL}
directive.
http://code.google.com/p/modwsgi/wiki/ApplicationIssues#Python_Simplified_GIL_State_API
That is often a good remedy for process crashes when using Python third party
extensions modules which aren't implemented properly to work in sub
interpreters.
