OK, I sorted it out... my problem was in fact a malconfigured vhost. I added the lang and locale parameters to the WSGIDaemonProcess statement, set them to "en_US.UTF-8" and I got valid UTF-8. Before I was getting UnicodeEncodeError and obviously misinterpreted them. Thanks for the debugging tips!
