You could extend it to do that, yes... But really, what would be significantly more lightweight than HTTP?
We're investigating mogilefs for storing large numbers of medium-sized files which we will need to be able to stream to compute nodes for processing. Is this something mogilefs can do?
If your http client library can "stream", then sure.
