Used to be that way in aviation. Speeds in knots, altitudes in feet,
runway lengths in metres...
Also seems the latest theory of why the good ship Vasa sank
on it's maiden voyage in 1628 was that the carpenters measured
in feet - unfortunately the Dutch foot, used by the Dutch
carpenters on one side of the ship didn't match the Swedish
foot used by the locals on the other side...
