We advise people NOT to purchase the breathalyser kits in UK (Halfrauds etc or especially at the ports on the ferry|) I purchased half a dozen in Super U last month for €4.50. Wait until getting to France.
Most people think this law is simply a money saving thing for the police – they regularly have mass checks, so the cost of the kits they use is significant. Now they stop you and you have to provide the kit! Bon voyage Quentin _____ From: Richard Jones [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 29 June 2012 00:20 To: mogtalk2 Subject: Re: [mogtalk2] Headlamp Masking for France Dave It's not about just your lights anymore - Don't forget that it is French law that you will need to carry at least one disposable breathalyser kit from 1st July ( 2 are recommended, in case you are forced to use one of your own by the police to prove yours works, even though they will use their own digital device); although as I interprete it you won't actually be fined until 1st Novenber only warned, however better safe than sorry. Kits are widely available and not expensive and have a shelf life of 2 years) , I've just bought a pack of 5 for £12.95 - however they must be NF approved and carry the NF logo - beware imitations and any kit without a blow into bag is a copy. Also Hi viz jackets (with EN471 approved reflective stripes) for each occupant to be worn if you need to vacate your vehicle on a motorway hard shoulder, or you will be fined if stopped by the gendarmes and get out of the car without wearing one. BasIcally this means 2 or 3 reflective stripes - a yellow waistcoat with either two horizontal reflective stripes, or one horizontal and one over each shoulder. You also need a set of spare light bulbs - the list goes on - And do obey speed limits, especially in villages as there are many mobile cameras around with on the spot fines - on this do make sure you have downloaded the latest Garmin/TomTom 'SAFETY' camera zone software as it is now illegal to have French 'SPEED' Camera Zones installed on your device (not sure how they prove this though) - I am sure Quentin will have a list of essentials included when he sends out his packs. Despite all this France is a wonderful country to go touring in, just don't think you can become a boy racer and take liberties just because you are abroad and on holiday.
