I had what sounds similar with my 1998 4/4 Zetec which continued to try to drive along when I wanted to stop - scary to say the least!! The problem was the clutch master cylinder which when replaced - engine out NOT required - solved problem. She had only done 16,000 miles at the time and also required new off-side brake cylinder. Perhaps due top lack of use?
