Hi Dave You +8 has for the past 15 years been cooled by the radiator in the engine bay and I believe the issue lies in that unit, rather than any other component.
I have a '99 +8 and had to have it re-cored several years ago. I was absolutely amazed at how choked the core was after less than 10 years. I had been running with temperatures in excess of 110C in most conditions, with the fan running almost constantly, but found that the fan cut out very quickly once the engine was switched off. I removed the radiator and back-flushed it: With the radiator upside down, you need to ensure that the connection to the bottom hose entry is fairly well sealed and when the water was running through, I blockeded the top hose connector with my hand so that the pressure built up. Removing my hand I found that a lot of grey/white chalk-like stuff was dislodged and washed onto the ground. This build up and release of pressure was repeated several times and did improve the effectiveness of my rad, but the writing was on the wall! You will doubtless get a wee bit wet if you follow this procedure!!!! I can't recall exactly, but I suspect that if you drain water from the rad and remove the top hose and look in this opening you may be able to see the top of the core. If it is showing signs of deposits, it probably time to consider a re-core. If you are having a re-core, make sure that you have a digital photo and dimensions of how the bottom pipe on the rad is aligned, as it took three attempts to get the correct alignment on mine! I cannot find the picture of the core which was removed, but once replaced I found that I could drive with both eyes on the road rather than with one on the gauge! My plus eight has the normal problem of getting hot when stationary. I have opened the rear of the bonnet 40mm and fitted an aluminium rad. Still have a slight issue. Before fitting an oil cooler a guy at LeMans suggested fitting a smaller pulley to the water pump to draw more water through the system. With a standard 97 3.9 hotwire I believe I may have room on the pump to try this, engine doesn't rev as high as a worked 4.6. However before I start machining a billet I would like to check the pump characteristics to ensure I don't end up with cavitation in the pump. Currently toying with a 10-15 % speed increase. Now the point . Can anyone provide a spec for the water pump, preferably with characteristic curves. Thanks in advance.
