If your car is like mine (a 1972 4/4) you would be forgiven for thinking you
do need to take the engine off.

The problem is there is a plate between the engine and the gearbox
bellhousing that gets in the way of removing the back sump bolts. It is
possible to remove the plate but it is not something I've ever seen on line
as it is a bit unusual, tantamount to bodgery and definitely needs care.

I have done it and the only special tool I used was a dremel to cut the
plate. You will need to take care as you need to split the engine and
gearbox, not strain the gearbox input shaft, supporting both the engine and
gearbox while one bolt only is in place, thus enabling the swinging of the
plate, the cutting of one side, then the holding with a bolt by that side
and cutting of the other.

>From memory you may need some longer bolts. They are imperial sized,
probably UNF but I suggest you remove one bolt and get some more from your
local industrial ironmongers.

Not sure whether you'd be able to recut a bigger drain plug size as a the
sump is just pressed steel, but if not, an insert brazed in may be the
answer.

These days you won't find a crossflow sump at a breakers, and in any event,
there is a chance you've got a Ford Sport Crossflow sump with some baffling.
These are worth hanging onto as they work, and a lot of homemade baffled
sumps don't.

Subject: [mogtalk2] crossflow sump

Hi
I, err...rushing, as usual, I stripped the threads on the sump plug of my
4/4. It's a 1600 gt engine, 1974.
I reckon I'll have to remove the sump and get the hole drilled and tapped.
Am I on the right track? I'd really welcome any suggetsions.

I came to drop the sump but notice the rear two bolts appear to be covered
by what looks like the engine back plate. Please tell me I don't have to
split the the engine from gear box to do this job... Gulp. Wish I'd taken
a littl emore time on in the first place...

Thanks,

Gair
