Two ways:

Look at the "meta" file in your data directory.

Bring up the SystemInfo page.

Ah, I see -- and that's it, huh?  No need to update the underlay directory or anything?  All of that was done by the migration script?
Sorry, I was only answered the first question - how can you see what happened.

You do need to update your underlay.

Every upgrade I've done I've also carefully scanned the CHANGES file to see if there was anything in there that mattered to me.  I've not looked at 1.8.1 --> 1.8.2 yet myself.
