Just for completeness and having everything in one location, the following 
solution was suggested on the Internet. It would be placed inside the 
VirtualHost declaration. The effect is the same, to create an environment 
variable with the value of the authorization header.

SetEnvIf Authorization "(.*)" HTTP_AUTHORIZATION=$1
