Sorry to be a downer but I doubly disagree with this advice. If you must have 
lots of Perl code in your template I'd use <% ... %> form, though I'd structure 
it like this:

<%
  my $foo = ...;
  ...
%>

That said, I've only very rarely needed to do that. I'd highly suggest moving 
that code to a helper or a controller method.
