perhaps have a look at mailloop.monitor, which you can find somewhere in the contributions.
It will deliver you test messages and check whether they arrived in a POP box. However, the functionality is quite limited. Another drawback is that when you use a long interval, it seems to block mon more or less until the mail arrived or the interval passed.
I planned to write something similar but more powerful, but only God nows when I'll more or less finish it ;-)
