They make sense, but then again, they don't.  :-)

The flags are only ever passed to libtool which knows what to do there.
 It translates this flag to -Wl,--rpath -Wl,/directory on Linux (which
is what I need).  I'm sure it does something useful on other systems as
well.

The path being added is the modules directory
(/usr/lib(64)/MonetDB[45]/lib) and not any system directories which are
searched by default.
